Geographic Information Systems for Transportation
(GIS-T)

The ADOT GIS-T Section maintains the statewide street centerline GIS database and coordinates GIS issues for ADOT. The GIS database (also known as the Arizona Transportation Information System, or ATIS Roads) is the foundation for numerous planning studies and programs.

What is ATIS?

The Arizona Transportation Information System (ATIS) is what ADOT refers to when talking about the Arizona base road map, otherwise known as ATIS Roads. ATIS Roads is a GIS coverage (or layer) of Arizona roads and streets. It originated from the ALISS (Accident Location Information Surveillance System) map base that was maintained by Photogrammetry and Mapping until its conversion to GIS in the early 1990's. What began as a simple drawing tool has now emerged into a full Geographic Information System (GIS). This website was designed to disseminate GIS data and maps. The ATIS Roads coverage is far from being complete.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in ADOT

GIS is rapidly becoming a necessary technology tool for planning, analyzing, modeling and managing information. Its most apparent usefulness is that GIS provides a visual array of information that enables the user to easily understand complex environmental, economic, and social issues. GIS can also be an effective tool for collaboration and coordination of programs, policies and activities.

ADOT has been utilizing GIS technology for quite some time, though only recently (in the past few years) has its usefulness begun to be recognized throughout the Department. The GIS Team is committed to providing support to ADOT for the many projects that contain a GIS component.
